Mokosh
Mokosh is the only female deity of an Old Russian
pantheon, whose idol stood at the top of the hill near the idols
of Perun, Khors, Dazhbog, Stribog, and Semargl.
The character and functions of this goddess are
still not clear. Some authors consider her as the goddess of
water, rain, bad weather, thunder-storm connected with the
deities of fertility. Mokosh as the goddess of fertility is
closely connected with Semargl and griffins, with the mermaids
irrigating the fields. Other researchers, who studied eastern
Slavic customs, suppose that Mokosh was connected with spinning
and weaving. Mokosh is considered to be the patroness of women
and female needlework. She is represented as the woman with big
head and long hands. It spins at night in a log hut, therefore
the superstitions forbid to leave a tow. Mokosh is invisible,
but her presence can be noticed because of the spindle’s
rumbling.bling.
