Lugh
Lugh (“Shining”) is one of the most significant gods
of the Tuatha Dé Danann tribe in the Irish mythology, it has a
solar nature.
“It has comprehended everything what your people are
skilful in”, — said the gatekeeper Nuadu to the Tuatha king when
he met Lugh. Lugh is the expert in many arts and crafts (he is
the carpenter, and the blacksmith, the harpist, the fílid,
expert in affairs of old times, the physic, the carver, the
fighter and the hero), and for this he carries nickname
Samhildánach, which means "Equally skilled in many arts" .
In the saga “Cath Muige Tuired” Lugh together with
Dagda and Nuadu is a part of the triad of great governors of
Tuatha Dé Danann, while Nuadu himself concedes the royal throne
to the god-hero.
But, first of all he is the one who defeated Balor,
the king of Fomorians in the second battle of Muige Tuired, the
one who brought the victory of Muige Tuired to the Tuatha in
this war. Lugh is also the father of Cú Chulainn the most
celebrated hero in Irish sagas.
